This time 12 months ago there was considerable doom and gloom in the dredging industry, despite the burgeoning number of port construction projects. But today, both sectors covered by DPC are booming.
The good news began with $5Bn contracts in the Middle East for Boskalis, Jan De Nul and Van Oord.
There was a further celebration for Jan De Nul in July - a $200M+ contract to reclaim the first of seven islands for the Dubai Waterfront development over the next 18 months. The entire project will take approximately six years to complete and there's six more islands to reclaim...
And as I write, we're still waiting to hear who'll dredge two other huge projects: India's Sethusamudram shipping channel and the Panama Canal expansion - assuming the referendum gives president Martin Torrijos the go-ahead.
Turning to the port construction market, and starting in Panama, President Torrijos is tendering for a $600M port to be built on an artificial island at the Pacific end of the Canal.
In the Far East, among many, many projects, two enormous ports, Yangshan and Pusan Newport, have just come on stream offering huge potential for the future, along with more development.
In the Middle East, among many other projects, Hutchison Port Holdings are behind a new container terminal in Oman of which phase one alone boasts a 520m quay, alongside depth of 16m and post-Panamax cranes.
In the USA at Alabama's Port of Mobile, APM Terminals and CMA CGM's Terminal Link are spending $300M on a new box terminal at Choctaw Point.
And of course, we can't overlook Rotterdam, where a new container terminal is going ahead on Maasvlakte 1 while CEO Hans Smits is confident of building the 2,000ha, €2.9Bn Maasvlakte 2.
DPC will stay on top of all these projects - and many more - in the coming year. And we hope you enjoy reading about them.
Which is why advertising in DPC is a sound business decision.
"Ever since I joined the dredging world, I've been of the opinion that Dredging and Port Construction is a magazine that provides valuable insights into the ins & outs of the industry. The copies we receive in the office are immediately snatched away from under my nose by colleagues and are read thoroughly. It doesn't only help us to stay up to date, but also gives background information on projects, dredgers and the industry in general."
Sandy Bergkamp, VOSTA LMG
DPC is going to be busy over the next 12 months keeping tabs on all this activity. But with our mix of global news, features, case studies and informed opinion from industry experts, we'll be on site as much as possible, looking for solutions applicable worldwide and keeping you informed.
